Red Rock Rovers Newsletter February 2012

1. Chapter Happenings
Our winter rally was a great success. We had twenty-three rigs involved in some phase of the rolling rally. That represents two-thirds of our membership. Additionally we had FMCA guests with us for dinner in Quartzsite.
The one concern was that we probably scheduled too much for some days. The visit to Red Rock Canyon was much more that we had expected with all new exhibits and numerous observation stops. One could easily spend a whole day visiting that location. Over 40 folks boarded the Atomic Bus for our tour of the Nevada Test Site. Our guide and host was a veteran DOE employee who had numerous stories from all of the past historic episodes of the development of the nuclear bombs.
We now have a pause in our Chapter travels. Our next really is not scheduled until April. However, if you plan to attend any of the next four rallies, you need to be alert and proactive to make sure you get your reservations completed. All of these locations are in smaller parks with high demand and procrastination could leave you without a site. Note the following special circumstances below:
· The April Moab rally is at a peak time of the year. We have reserved 20 sites but they will only hold them until 45 days before the rally. Make your reservation now.
· The Summer Rally in June is at Deer Creek State Park. They have full hookups but the total number of sites is limited. The anglers flock to this site during the summer. The first day you can make your reservation for this State Park is February 23. The first to register will get the best view and pull-thru sites overlooking the lake.
· The Fall Rally at Fish Lake has a limited number of RV sites. The total number available is probably around 15 when you consider those who reserve a site for the season. You can make your reservation now as several already have.
· The first part of the Winter Rally will be at Buckskin Mountain State Park in Arizona. The park is on the Colorado River. They have quite a few sites but only about a third of the sites have sewer hookups. All sites have water and electricity. There is a dump in the park. You can make your reservations now for this location.
Details and information on making reservations is included below.
2. Moab – April 24 – 29
Our Spring Rally will be in Moab, Utah. The rally will be during the Moab annual Car Show. The Car Show is a big deal in Moab and is a very busy time. We were able to make reservations at the Spanish Trail RV Park. This is one of the best RV parks in Moab and is rated very high. However, it is expensive because of the high season. Our rates for Tuesday and Wednesday are $40 a night and for the weekend, the rate goes up to $50 a night. These rates are their discounted group rate.
The RV Park has the following facilities:
The webpage for the RV Park is www.spanishtrailrvpark.com
We are holding reservations on 20 sites. Each rig will need to call in, make their reservation, and hold it with a credit card. For reservations call: 1-800-787-2751. Tell them you are with the Red Rock Rovers. We will have to release all of our unused reservations at least 45 days in advance of the rally so please call in and make your reservation as soon as possible. All reservations will need to be secured by early March. Make your reservation now!!
The activities at the rally will include the following:
3. Heber Valley – June 19 – 24
Our Summer Rally will be at the Deer Creek State Park. The park is located on the south end of Deer Creek Lake just after driving up Provo Canyon. Note the location of the State Park and the campground on this website: http://static.stateparks.utah.gov/maps/dcspoverview.png. There is so much to do in this area we are planning a 5 day rally. It will be worth it.
The State Park campground has full hookups. There are pull-thru and back-in sites. Most of the sites have a view overlooking the lake. The campground also has a view of the backside of Mount Timpanogos.
There are two camping areas. When you make your reservation, be sure to select the Chokecherry Campground, which has the full hookups.
You can check out the details of the State Park at www.utah.com/stateparks/deer_creek.htm. A map of the campground showing the various sites can be viewed at http://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/deer-creek/maps/chokecherry.
Reservations are permitted but cannot be made more than 60 days in advance. The reservation window for our rally time begins on February 23. It will be necessary to make your reservation as soon as possible after that date as this location is very desirable and the best sites (view sites and pull thrus) fill up fast and there are only 40 sites available in the Chokecherry campground.
Activities for the rally will include:

As you can see, this is a very scenic and wonderful area to visit. There are many things to do. It will be a great rally location.
4. Fish Lake – September 5 - 8
Fish Lake is located in South Central Utah near the town of Koosharem.
Fish Lake is one of the premier fishing locations in Utah. Beginning in the 1920’s, it was equivalent to the draw of Lake Powell today. A massive log lodge was build (over 300 ft long) that served as the social center during those early years. Dances were held on weekend nights with live music. It was the place to go.
The lodge is still open and operating, albeit it is somewhat tattered. It is still one of the largest log structures in the United States. It is a great place to have a nice dinner.
The Lake was formed in a geologic ‘Graben’ and is 160 feet deep, thus the quality of the fishing and the possibility of catching one of the big ones are good. The campground is located on a ridge above the lake with all of the sites overlooking the Lake. The whole setting is very scenic with deer occasionally wandering through camp.
The campground is filled during the summer but should be open enough for a rally just after Labor Day.
The webpage provides additional information. Click on www.fishlake.com. Be sure to check out the “photo album” on the website to get a feel for this location and the beauty of the lake. The description on the home page gives you an overview of the fishing and the lodge. One can rent a fishing boat and there is a boat launch available for RV Park visitors. Most of the fishing is done from a boat with shore fishing of rather poor quality.
You can call at any time to make your reservation. The phone number is 435 638 1000. You will see on the webpage that there are only 24 total RV sites. Some are filled with seasonal campers. Plan to arrive on September 5 and leave on September 8.
Activities can include:
